Introducing the World of Mat Brown
マット・ブラウンは、コールドプレスのマットボード（紙）にインクで描かれた独特なドローイング手法にて、人類の創世記よりの自然史、芸術と科学の再融合を作品化している。スペインのマドリッドのアートフェアARCOでの個展や、トロント現代美術館MOCAでの「Ineffable Plasticity」で作品が高く評価された。マット・ブラウンの現代創世神話作品は、47億年前から21世紀までの生態系を人類の進化と社会の理解に重点を置いた、総合的な自然史の教科書である。全ての動物や植物の化石記録から調査するという（時には画像そのものが存在しないこともある）彼のリサーチ力にも圧倒される。先史時代の生態系の古典的なヌードと科学の組み合わせは、芸術と科学の再会の文学的な表現である。この継続的なプロジェクトは、最終的には、過去·現在·未来でそれぞれ完結した3部作の一大叙事詩になるという。180万年前に出現した早期の人類が徐々に体毛が薄くなって直立歩行を始めるプロセスなど、一見グロテスクなブラウンの描写力は超絶である。彼は、幼少時からの漫画好きで、士郎正宗に特に影響を受ける。日本のポップカルチャーを愛し、大友克洋を神のように崇めているという。彼の夢は、いつか日本の書店に自分の作品集が飾られる事であるという。若山美術館にて日本初公開されるマット・ブラウンの作品は必見である。（武谷大介）
Mat Brown works on reconciliation of art and science with the genesis of human beings within the context of natural history by his unique drawing technique of ink on a cold pressed museum matte board. His work was critically acclaimed at a solo exhibition at ARCO Art Fair in Madrid, Spain and “Ineffable Plasticity” at Museum of Contemporary Art-Toronto (MOCA Toronto). Mat Brown’s work is a contemporary myth of genesis as a comprehensive natural history textbook focusing on the evolution of mankind and society’s understanding of the ecosystem from 4.7 billion years ago to the 21st century. One can be overwhelmed by his research ability investigating from fossil records of all animals and plants (sometimes their images do not exist). The combination of classical nudity and science of pre-historic ecosystems is a literary expression of the reunion of art and science. This continuous project will eventually become a large epic of triplets of the past, the present and the future. At first glance perhaps grotesque, Brown’s drawing ability is transcendental, as seen in the process of early mankind appeared 1.8 million years ago gradually thinning their hair and walking upright. Brown grew up reading manga since his childhood, and Shiro Masamune was his particular idol. He loves Japanese pop culture and worships Otomo Katsuhiro like a god. His dream is that one day the collection of his work will be displayed in Japanese bookstores. It is a must-see exhibition at Wakayama Art Museum consists of for Mat Brown’s work to be released for the first time in Japan. (Daisuke Takeya)
